Steps to Become a Locksmith in Colorado

There are no state requirements to obtain a certificate or license.

However, a certificate and hands-on experience will greatly enhance a candidate’s probability of getting employed by a good company.

Step 1: Enroll in a Locksmithing program.

There are two formats for training: traditional and online.

Training will allow candidates to become familiar with the industry and the requirements to be successful.

Upon completion of the program, candidates will obtain a Locksmithing certificate.

Step 2: Apply for an apprenticeship.

It is a great way to gain hands-on experience with professionals.

Step 3: Some candidates prefer to work for companies, while others have more of an entrepreneurial spirit.

As a locksmith, you can start your own company with very few start-up costs.

You could either run a store-front shop work from home, or a van.

If you plan to start your own business, you are required to register your business with City Hall and obtain a contractors’ license, which states that your business name is different from your legal name.

Step 4: There are a few Locksmith trade associations that you can sign up for.

These organizations are there to help you stay updated with the developments in the sector.

In addition, registering with a trade association may help to expand your customers, industry bonding as well as insurance options for your business.

Licensing Requirements to Become a Locksmith in Colorado

The state of Colorado does not require locksmiths to be licensed or to have any special training.

However, if you plan to open a locksmith business, you are required to apply for certain business permits and licenses.

You may speak to City Hall regarding the steps to get your business licensed and ensure that you are compliant.
